Ask Me Early continued his impressive progress over fences on Saturday 8 January with a professional success in the limited Novice Handicap Chase at Chepstow.
On a rewarding day for the yard he made just about all the running off a mark of 128 before finding plenty on the run-in to see off the persistent challenge of Hold That Thought.
Captain Drake then did well to finish fourth in the Coral Welsh National before Misty Whisky finished fast to take second place in the fiercely competitive Lanzarote Hurdle at Kempton.
Ask Me Early is one of those horses who can sustain a strong gallop all day. His jumping was excellent and Sean Bowen got him into a lovely rhythm from flagfall.
The first two had the race between them all the way up the straight and though Ask Me Early didn’t meet the final fence on a good stride, he barely lost any ground and was resolute on the run in.
He looks the ideal type for the Welsh National in a year’s time but hopefully we can have some more fun with him before then.
Captain Drake isn’t entirely straightforward and took time to warm to the task but Bryan Carver knows him well, he kept persevering and they were staying on well in the closing stages.
Misty Whisky has really bounced back to form this season and put up the best performance of her career in finishing second in the Lanzarote with the help of a fine ride by our conditional jockey Lorcan Murtagh.
