Black Mischief rolled back the years with a decisive victory at Newton Abbot on Monday 12 July in the staying handicap hurdle.

On only his second start in more than two years he relished the ease in the ground, travelled comfortably throughout and came clear in the closing stages to beat the favourite Kilmington Rose by twenty three lengths with stable companion Mr One More also in the money in third place.

We have had takeour time with Black Mischief after he picked up a leg injury and were thrilled with his comeback run at Aintree fifty six days ago after such a long absence.

We felt he had come on plenty for that outing but then had to pull him out of two recent races because of unsuitably quick ground.

Conditions at Newton Abbot were ideal and we were delighted that the patience of his owners Tom Chadney and his friends was rewarded with such a pleasing success.

There should be more to come from Black Mischief and I am tempted to take him to Galway for an £80,000 handicap hurdle over two and three quarter miles.

We’ve had only a handful of horses in work over the summer but are getting busy again ahead of the core season with as many as sixty back in training by the end of this week.

With all the staff back from holiday the mood is upbeat as we look to consolidate and go again.
