Dubrovnik Harry fulfilled the promise of his fine debut at Exeter with a sparkling victory in a maiden hurdle on his return to the same track on New Year’s Day.

A big, imposing type by the multiple Ascot Gold Cup winner Yeats, he travelled stylishly behind the leaders before taking over after the third last and then steadily drawing clear to beat American Gerry by twenty five lengths.

It was good to start 2022 on an upbeat note and while I felt he had improved a fair bit from his first start a month ago in an EBF qualifier I can’t say I expected him to win so easily.

Dubrovnik Harry did everything right on the day and could be a suitable candidate for the EBF final at Sandown in March once he has run for a third time.

I’ll see how the handicapper reacts before making firm plans, but long term this is a horse with the size and scope to make a chaser.
