Fairy Gem made an ideal start to her racing career with a narrow victory in the mares’ bumper at Plumpton on Monday 13 December.

In beating Peerless Beauty in a tight photo finish she was extending to a tally of four winners with a sequence of fillies owned by The Chasing Gold Racing Club who have won bumpers for us on their debuts.

Fairy Gem is a full sister to Chasing Gold’s Outofthisworld who was the first of the quartet to succeed at Market Rasen in March 2017. She progressed with racing and on her second start over hurdles beat Annie Mac, no less, by eight lengths.

I’d like to think that there is plenty of improvement to come from Fairy Gem who hasn’t had an away day and was unsuited by the steady early pace at Plumpton.

She briefly lost her position when the tempo quickened but showed a willing attitude as she began to close under a determined ride by Sean Bowen.

Fairy Gem caught Peerless Beauty a stride before the line and the performance can be marked up given that the first two finished well clear of the chasing pack.
