Our Surprise gained a stylish first success over hurdles at Newton Abbot on Saturday 3 April in the colours of Simon Munir and Isaac Souede.

He had shown plenty of promise when second on his hurdles debut at Exeter early in March and being a son of Jeremy he enjoyed the better ground at Newton Abbot as he made all the running before coasting home unchallenged.

It was encouraging to note that his winning time was eight seconds quicker than in the first division of the maiden hurdle half an hour earlier.

The winner of an Irish point to point late in October, Our Surprise was sent to us before Christmas and has settled nicely into our routine.

He did not have a hard race at Newton Abbot so we will look to run him again under a penalty, maybe in a better race at Cheltenham’s upcoming meeting.
