Whisky Express gave us the perfect start to a big week for the yard with a pleasing success on her racecourse debut in the mares’ bumper at Taunton on Monday 15 March.
We have four runners at the Cheltenham Festival and watching her stretch clear in the closing stages at one of our local tracks was a timely way of settling the nerves ahead of Metier’s challenge in the opening Supreme Hurdle on Tuesday.
Whisky Express looked a live danger to the leaders as she moved into contention on the final bend before running green through inexperience. But the more Sean Bowen pushed and squeezed the more she responded and she was well on top at the line in a decent bumper.
It was an excellent hands and heels educational ride by Sean on a filly who has a bright future.
Whisky Express is a big, tall, rangy type, although quite light framed so we have been bringing her along quietly. We’ll see how she comes out of the race before making any plans and she will be all the better for a summer out to grass.
She is a half sister to our three time bumper winner Ishkhara Lady who we retired late last week after she finished lame at Wincanton.
