MEET THE OWNER, JEREMY GEAR
After selling his successful roofing supplies company near Sherborne, Jeremy Gear was eager to pursue a new personal interest. He began his journey into sole ownership by acquiring the striking five-year-old Idaho Sun.
Sourced from Ireland at the Goffs Arkle Sale, Ciara, alongside Kevin and Anna Ross, deserve the credit for picking him out having looked at over 200 catalogued horses. They immediately took a shine to the honest eye of ‘Texas’ as he is known at home.
A powerful horse with an unflappable nature. Jeremy comments, “By all accounts, he was fairly straightforward when breaking in. Though these days, I’ve seen he loves to show off with a playful buck and kick on the gallops.”
“I don’t think I’ve stopped smiling or slept properly since his debut!” Idaho Sun’s impressive unbeaten record in two bumper starts quickly escalated, and Jeremy now has a solid each-way contender for the Cheltenham Festival Champion Bumper.
“Windsor was amazing, and if Harry told me we were going back to Newton Abbot next week (where he made his debut), I’d be just as thrilled. Having this horse has brought so much joy to us all. I can’t go to the local shop without someone asking how he’s doing.”
He continues, “To have a runner at a major spring festival is the stuff of dreams. The team at Higher Crockermoor are incredibly welcoming; it’s like a close-knit family. I go down there every other week if I can. It’s a massive contrast from being a fan to an owner, you see the sport in a completely different context.”
Many will know Jeremy at Higher Crockermoor for supplying delicious home made cakes, baked by his wife and daughter, but as a stockman, he adds, “Getting a horse to the racecourse in peak condition requires an army of great people and, of course, a bit of luck along the way.”
The journey of racehorse ownership for The Gear family and friends is just beginning, and with a horse like Idaho Sun, the future couldn’t look brighter.
