SAN GIOVANNI LOSES HIS MAIDEN TAG AT WORCESTER

 In Uncategorized

The welcome success of San Giovanni in a maiden hurdle at Worcester on Saturday 11 June provided belated compensation for an X-rated incident that abruptly ended his chance at Newton Abbot in April.

He looked poised to win that day until he ran out of room at the final flight and went through the wing, sending his jockey Kevin Brogan somersaulting to the ground.

The Newton Abbot stewards took a dim view of Brendan Powell’s riding that day for a manoeuvre they declared was improper riding and promptly banned him for two weeks.

San Giovanni was lucky to escape with a minor cut while thankfully Kevin was unscathed. Frankly it could have been much worse for horse and rider. So it was good to see San Giovanni jumping with confidence on his way to a decisive victory from the front in the colours of the GDM Partnership.

It wasn’t the plan to make the running but Nick Scholfield sensibly let him bowl along when it was clear that no-one else wanted to go forward.

The horse is now qualified for the final of the Arc Summer Novice Brush Hurdle Series at Worcester in September. As he enjoys nice ground he should be competitive when he runs again under a penalty in a few weeks time.
